About

Dr. Alexander Pittman was a public-school teacher for nearly a decade, teaching Social Studies and History to middle and high school students. After leaving the secondary classroom, Dr. Pittman attended The Ohio State University, where he earned a PhD. in Multicultural and Equity Studies in Education (MESE). As a doctoral student, he was the recipient of several awards for his scholarship and service, including the College of Education and Human Ecology Dissertation Fellowship and the Chair’s Award for Commitment to Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice. In addition, Dr. Pittman holds degrees from the University of South Florida (Master of Science in Management) and Central Michigan University (Bachelor of Science in Education). 

Currently, Dr. Pittman is an assistant professor in the Department of History, specializing in Social Studies Education. Dr. Pittman teaches both history and education courses and advises graduate students across several disciplines. In his scholarship, he draws on humanizing and collaborative research methodologies to co-construct knowledge with students, educators, and community stakeholders. Dr. Pittman is currently involved in multiple projects that seek to diversify and deepen how students, teachers, and the community at large engage in social studies and history education. 

Dr. Pittman has contributed several publications related to identity, equity, and social justice in education. Furthermore, he presents his scholarly work annually at conferences such as the American Educational Research Association (AERA), the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), and the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME). Dr. Pittman is committed to diversifying both the curriculum and the teacher workforce to create an equitable and inclusive learning environment for all students.
